What should you do in order to prevent further data loss?
There are several best practices that you should follow to prevent further data loss and to give your data the best possible chance of being recovered if your device has failed or is busy failing and no longer allowing access to your data.
- Do not panic and make hasty decisions, as this may cause further damage or lead to permanent data loss; all may not be lost.
- Switch the device off immediately, especially if you hear strange noises.
- Do not run any utilities or data recovery software on a drive that is noisy, difficult to detect or difficult to access.
- Do not copy any data to a potentially damaged device.
- This may cause further damage to the data as important data areas may be overridden in the process.
- Do not format, re-load or modify the partitions on a potentially faulty device.
- Do not open the device.
- Hard drives are very sensitive to contamination and should only be opened in a controlled cleanroom environment, i.e. class 100 cleanroom.
- We do not recommend replacing the controller board as that may cause damage to the device's firmware programming.
- Most modern hard drive programming is specific to that drive despite having an exact matching printed circuit board (PCB).
- Please ensure that the original PCB is fitted back onto the drive before being shipped to us (should you have replaced the PCB)
- Consider sending your device to a reputable data recovery company should the data be of significant value to you.
- In some situations, we will only have one chance of successfully recovering the data.
- Please package the device as if you are sending us an egg so as not to cause more damage when shipped!
- Hard disk drives and other data storage devices are delicate and sensitive to being bumped and knocked around.
- Additional damage may make a successful recovery more difficult or, in extreme cases, unrecoverable.
