What are the two broad categories of data recovery?
Our data recovery services falls into two broad categories: logical data recovery and physical data recovery.
Logical Data Recovery (Software-Related):
This type of data recovery refers to recovering lost or corrupt data from a fully functioning data storage device.
Typical causes include file corruption, deletion, system reloads or ransomware attacks. The data is recovered without physically repairing the device using specialised software and techniques.
Physical Data Recovery (Hardware-Related):
In contrast, physical data recovery refers to recovering inaccessible data caused by physical issues with the storage device.
This is due to physical damage to the device, such as motor (spindle) failure, faulty head stack, firmware corruption, platter or storage chip degradation in the form of bad sectors, and circuit board (PCB) failure. Symptoms include clicking, grinding noises, unresponsive drives, or slow read/write speeds. Data recovery may involve repairing or replacing components and firmware using specialised tools and techniques.
