Water damage - What should I do?
There are several best practices that you should follow to give your data the best possible chance of being recovered if your device suffers from some form of liquid damage.
- Never assume a device (cell phone, hard disk drive or other media) is not recoverable once submerged in water or another liquid.
- Do not attempt to switch on your device, but disconnect the power if possible, as water conducts electricity and will cause more damage to the electronic components.
- Do not attempt to dry out the drive.
- Place the drive in a sealed bag or container - as soon as possible after removing it from the liquid.
- This is due to contaminants that may hamper all chances of recovering the data, leaving a residue once dry.
- Do not open your device, especially hard drives, as they need to be opened in a sterile environment and cleaned by a professional data recovery engineer in order to avoid further contamination, ensuring that you will have the best possible chance of recovering your data.
