Do you repair or refurbish digital storage devices?
This is a question we get often—and the answer is simple:
No, we do not refurbish storage devices for re-use.
Our goal isn't to bring back your hard drive, SSD, or cell phone to life so it can be used again. Our job is to recover your data - safely, quickly, and with as little risk as possible.
While we perform highly technical repairs on storage devices, our purpose fundamentally differs from that of a repair shop aiming to return a fully functional device to service.
Repairs With One Purpose: Safe and Complete Data Extraction
Our lab uses advanced tools and specialised equipment to disassemble and repair digital storage devices to retrieve inaccessible data. But every repair we make is temporary and purpose-driven. We're not trying to give the device a second life - we're trying to extract your data before it's lost for good.
Whether it's a failed read/write head, corrupted firmware, or a damaged PCB, we'll do what's needed to get the device stable enough for recovery. Once the data's out, we're done.
To achieve this, especially with physically damaged or failing media, intricate procedures are often necessary:
- Targeted Interventions: Our lab is equipped with advanced tools that allow us to perform component-level repairs. This might involve replacing electronic board components and damaged read/write heads using parts from a matching donor drive in our cleanroom environment or performing other delicate operations.
- Stabilisation for Extraction: These repairs are not intended to make the device permanently usable. Their sole purpose is to stabilise the device just long enough to safely extract or image the raw data onto secure, new media, avoiding further data loss during the process.
- Minimising Risk, Maximising Recovery: Every action we take is calculated to retrieve the maximum amount of data possible, with the least amount of risk to the fragile original media, and as efficiently as possible.
Why We Don't Refurbish Devices for Re-Use
We deliberately choose not to repair devices with the intention of making them suitable for everyday use again. Here's why:
Here's why:
- Underlying Causes of Failure: Storage devices rarely fail without a reason. Often, the failure points to worn-out components, inherent weaknesses in design, or flaws in the manufacturing or assembly process. A simple repair doesn't address these root causes.
- High Risk of Repeat Failure: Our extensive experience since 1999 has shown that storage devices repaired after a significant failure are likely to fail again, often within a short period. The original weakness usually persists.
- Potential for Permanent Data Loss: If a refurbished drive fails again, the damage can be far more severe, potentially making any subsequent data recovery attempts impossible. We cannot, in good conscience, put our clients' data at such risk.
- Trust and Reliability: We do not trust previously failed media for reliable data storage. If we wouldn't trust it with our critical data, we wouldn't certify it for yours.
- Refurbishment is a Different Discipline: Properly refurbishing a drive involves rigorous testing, quality control, and certification processes that fall outside the scope of data recovery and forensic investigation.
Bottom Line
We repair devices only as part of the data recovery process. We do not repair them for resale or re-use. Our decision not to offer device refurbishment stems from our commitment to protecting your valuable data. Handing back a drive that will likely fail again would be a disservice. Instead, we focus all our expertise and resources on what we do best: recovering the data you thought was lost. We always recommend transferring recovered data to brand-new, high-quality storage media.
