Remote Data Recovery

Remote data recovery presents some "interesting challenges" compared to in-lab work. But, as the adage goes "Extraordinary times calls for extraordinary measures - Benet Wilson".

Many logical or software related issues (devices that are still detected) can be addressed remotely for instance deleted, lost or corrupt files, directories, email, formatted drives etc.

Most electro-mechanical or hardware related issues cannot be addressed remotely, for instance, your hard drive is no longer recognized by the when trying to boot and/or making strange sounds or not spinning etc.

The typical remote data recovery attempt procedure:

STEP 1

DO NOT PANIC Help is at hand :-)

STEP 2

Send us a quote request describing your situation or email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone us on 012-665-2945.

STEP 3

We will send you a preliminary quotation for a software and hardware recovery based on your data loss scenario. It is not possible to accurately determine the type of failure (software or hardware) before conducting a remote evaluation.

STEP 4

You approve the preliminary quotation (for both software or hardware recovery scenarios).

STEP 5

We will send you an invoice for the non-refundable remote evaluation.

STEP 6

We receive your payment as approval for the remote evaluation process.

STEP 7

We will send you instructions to enable us to make a remote connection for an analysis of your situation. We will require uninterrupted access to a PC with a stable internet and power connection – The evaluation may take between 1-6 hours depending on your drive's capacity and issue.

STEP 8

We will revert with our findings and invoice should we be able to recover your data remotely (or there is a very good chance) before proceeding with the remote attempt. We will, alternatively, send you shipping instructions should your device require in-lab hardware (cleanroom, physical repairs etc.) recovery.

Requirements for a remote data recovery attempt:

  • A working computer for exclusive use during the data recovery attempt.
    • Note that this computer may potentially be occupied for a number of days
  • An external USB 3 hard disk drive with adequate capacity to accept the recovered data.
  • A stable internet connection and power source.

Tecleo Data Recovery Service Plan (TDRSP)

{membershipplans ids="1,4"}

WHAT IS THE TECLEO DATA RECOVERY SERVICE PLAN?

This is a hard disk drive, solid state drive and mobile device data recovery service plan and NOT a warranty or insurance. The plan is available for new devices and is valid for THREE (3) years. This allows for ONE (1) hardware or software related data recovery attempt, at our Economy Service Levelincluding shipping, spares, labour and a destination device of adequate capacity up to a maximum of 1TB.

WHY DO I NEED A DATA RECOVERY SERVICE PLAN?

Hard drives, solid state drives, and mobile devices fail without notice, even within the manufacturer's warranty period. Such is life, and then we also make mistakes. It is not a question of IF but rather WHEN will you experience data loss. When it does, you can return the device to have it repaired or replaced depending on the warranty terms, BUT YOUR DATA WILL BE LOST FOREVER.

Why is that you may ask? - Well, the manufacturer warranty only covers the hardware - they do not accept any responsibility for your data as having a restorable backup is considered to be your responsibility, much like wearing a seatbelt or maintaining your vehicle.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

  • PEACE OF MIND - The data rescue attempt will be undertaken by professionals specializing in data recovery since 1999 in the unfortunate event of your device failing without a valid data backup in hand.
  • NO MORE GUESS WORK - No more running around trying to find a reliable data recovery service provider when the smelly stuff hits the fan.
  • NO BUDGET SHOCKS - Have a fixed data recovery price valid for three years.
  • ECONOMICAL -  Prevention is cheaper than a cure - A typical data recovery could cost you thousands of rands.

  • The original device will not be returned but will be securely disposed of, after the recovery attempt, irrespective of the outcome.
  • You should, if possible, back up accessible data on the device before sending it to TECLEO.

APPLICABLE LAW

  • The TDRSP will be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of the Republic of South Africa, and all disputes, actions and other matters relating to it will be determined in accordance with such law.

IMPORTANT
TECLEO has a proven track record and has been providing professional data recovery services since 1999. DATA RECOVERY IS HOWEVER NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE. Having a good data "protection" strategy is critical. We recommend that the customer follows these safety tips to avoid data loss:

  • Perform a regular back-up!
    • We recommend using a program like Goodsync Backup and Sync Software.
    • Store a current copy of your data on another storage device.
    • Test your backups regularly.
    • Keep at least one tested copy in a secure off-site location.
    • Invest in a reliable back-up strategy.
    • Back-up and test the data before performing any system upgrades.
  • Install a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for all your computer equipment to protect against power spikes, blackouts, and other power issues.
  • Turn off external storage devices only after shutting down the computer to avoid possible data corruption from occurring.
  • Purchase and regularly update a reliable anti-virus solution.
  • Do not move the laptop, PC or external drive while it is switched on.
  • Provide adequate ventilation around your computer equipment.
  • Turn the device of immediately should you hear any strange noises.
      • These sounds may indicate a mechanical problem that could result in permanent data loss.
  • See also the video "Ten things you should not do to a failing or failed hard drive!" if you have critical data on the drive.

DISCLAIMER:
THIS IS A DATA RECOVERY SERVICE PLAN AND NOT A WARRANTY OR INSURANCE. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO RECOVER YOUR DATA - DATA RECOVERY IS HOWEVER NOT GUARANTEED.

Logical device failure

Logical (software related) data loss - The device is mechanically working but suffers from a software issue.

The most common causes of logical data loss:

  • Formatted device - Formatting alone leaves the data areas (on a sector level) intact despite not being accessible via the operating system.
  • Operating system re-installation or reload - Data that was on the device, prior to reinstalling the operating system, and/or applications (with or without formatting) is normally intact (on a sector level).
  • Deleted file(s) and/or folder(s) - Accidental or intentionally deleted directories and/or files are normally intact (on a sector level).
  • Deleted or corrupt partition(s) - Deleting a partition alone leaves the data areas (on a sector level) intact despite not being accessible via the operating system.
  • Data corruption - could be due to number of factors including storage device quality, application quality (e.g. bad programming), memory quality, power stability, incorrectly shutting down devices or applications and incorrect ejection of removable drives.
  • Virus-infected or malware - Viruses and malware are malicious software applications that can delete, corrupt or encrypt your data for ransom.
  • Hacked - Can originate from inside or outside of your computer or network.

Data can in most cases be recovered and successfully investigated using specialised data recovery and forensic software unless the data areas have been compromised - overwritten, corrupted, encrypted or due to SSD trimming. The success rate would be dependent on the file sizes, file location and fragmentation before the potential data loss scenario, data activity after the incident and type of encryption. The best advice is to stop working, the moment you suspect data loss, and not to attempt to access the advice if you wish to have the best possible chance of recovering or investigation your data loss.

Floppy Disk Recovery

1.2mb 144mb floppy disk data recoveryProfessional data recovery from 360KB, 1.2MB and 1.44MB (5.25" and 3.5") floppy and stiffy disks irrespective of the condition of the media and/or potential data loss situation.
