Frequently asked data recovery questions

Q001: When do I need to consult a data recovery services unit?

Your answer will normally be dictated by the following factors:

  • How critical the data that is no longer accessible?
  • Have you calculated the cost implications in not retrieving your data in as good a condition as possible?
  • Am I prepared to sacrifice any chance of recovering the data by trusting an unqualified or in-experienced company or person in attempting the recovery?
    • There are data recovery situations where we may only have one chance at successfully retrieving your data.

Q002: How does it work, what is the normal procedure?

Step 1 - Fill out the quotation request form with as much information as possible or alternatively contact us during office hours for verbal quotation.

Step 2 - Ship your media for free a no-obligation-quotation.

You can therefore rest assured that we will do all in our power to firstly retrieve and secondly return your data in full confidentiality.

Q005: Can you guarantee the amount of data that can be recovered?

  • No, we cannot guarantee the amount (or success rate) until we have completed the data recovery - after receipt of your written approval.
  • You will however be contacted, prior to us raising an invoice, to confirm the usability of the data recovered should we suspect damage to some of the data. That is should we for some reason, not be able to recover all the data, or the data recovered not be in a good state.
  • Our no surprises policy dictates that you will not be invoiced should the data not be useable to you.

Q006: How much does it cost to recover the data?

  • We will in most cases be able to give you a firm quotation prior to you shipping the media.
  • Please submit our Quotation request form with as much detail as possible or alternatively phone us for a verbal quotation.

Q007: Can you retrieve data in all loss situations?

Unfortunately no - There are situations where only some or no data can be salvaged.

Q008: Do you have a quote rejection / evaluation fee?

No.

Q009: How do I get my media to you?

  • By hand or you can make use of our free collection and delivery within the borders of South Africa for all pre-approved recoveries - excluding servers, complete laptops and PCs..
  • We are situated next to the N1 highway in Centurion.
  • Directions and Location Map.

Q010: On which media will I get the data back?

  • Your recovered data will be transferred to a destination drive either supplied by yourself or we can quote for any drive currently available.
    • Most drives have more than 10GB worth of data and we therefore by default quote for a destination drive.

Q011: Do you repair and/or refurbish hard disk drives?

  • Our lab is equipped with a class 100 clean room facility and other proprietor data recovery specific tools and equipment that enables us to strip hard disk drives and carry out any repairs necessary in order to facilitate recovery of the data.
  • We however do not refurbish drives for re-use.

Q012: What is data recovery?

It is the recapturing of data by skilled data recovery professionals from hard disk drives, backup tapes, CD / DVD media, compact flash cards, floppy diskettes and all other types of digital media where a possible data loss situation exist.

Q013: What causes data loss?

Causes can include electro-mechanical failure through wear and tear or manufacturing faults, human intervention, intentional or unintentional, virus attacks, software corruption  as well as natural and unnatural disasters.

Q014: How do you retrieve the data?

Almost every data recovery is unique in some way. We employ a combination of conventional, non-conventional and proprietor techniques, tools, software and other equipment on a per media basis.

Q015: What is blue laser technology and can it be used for data recovery?

Blue laser or rather Blu-Ray also known as Blue-ray using blue (technically blue-violet) laser has been developed to increase the reading and writing densities of optical media. These can include DVD, holographic optical discs, 3-D fluorescent multi-layer optical media and near-field optical recording.
All optical devices uses physical variations in the media in order to read and write data. This in comparison with hard disk drives that uses variations in the magnetic properties of the media (platters).

Blu-ray technology can therefore only be used in the recovery of optical disks (CD/DVD etc.) and not hard disk drives.
(Hard disk drive manufacturers would have incorporated, or planned to incorporate this technology if it was at all possible to make use of its "superior" capabilities for accessing data on damaged disks as an alternative to the existing electro-magnetic read/write technology)

Q016: Water damage - What should I do?

  1. Never assume a hard disk drive (or other media) is not recoverable once submerged in water.
  2. Do not attempt to switch on your computer (or power-up the drive) as water conducts electricity and will cause more damage to the electronic components.
  3. Do not attempt to dry out the drive.
    • Place the drive in a sealed bag or container - as soon as possible after removing it from the water.
    • This is due to contaminants in the water that may hamper all chances of recovering the data leaving a residue once dry.
  4. Do not open the drive – the drive must be opened in a sterile environment and cleaned by a professional data recovery engineer in order to avoid further contamination – this will ensure that we will have the best possible chance of recovering your data.
